Extending External Monitor Display (Chromebook and Windows)

Instructions for Chromebook

Follow these steps to configure your Chromebook with an external monitor:

  1. Connect the Hardware: Connect your Chromebook to the external monitor using the appropriate cable (HDMI or USB-C).

  2. Access Settings: Click on the time/status area in the bottom-right corner of your screen, then click the Settings (gear icon).

  3. Navigate to Display Settings: Within the Settings menu, select Device, then choose Displays.

  4. Arrange the Screens: You will see a visual representation of both screens. Drag the screen icons to match their physical arrangement on your desk (e.g., if the monitor is to the right of your laptop, drag the icon to the right).

  5. Disable Mirroring: Ensure the "Mirror built-in display" checkbox is unchecked. This enables "Extended Mode," giving you separate workspaces on each screen.

Instructions for Windows Devices

Follow these steps to configure your Windows laptop with an external monitor:

  1. Physical Connection: Plug the external monitor into your laptop. Windows should automatically detect the new hardware.

  2. Display Settings: Right-click on an empty space on your Desktop and select Display settings. Alternatively, press Windows Key + P to open the quick projection menu.

  3. Multiple Displays Configuration: Scroll down to the Multiple displays section and select Extend these displays from the dropdown menu.

  4. Identify and Rearrange:

    • Click the Identify button to see which number (1 or 2) corresponds to each screen.

    • Drag the numbered boxes in the display preview to match the physical placement of your monitors.

  5. Apply Changes: If prompted, click Keep changes to save the configuration.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • No Signal: Check that the cable is securely plugged into both devices and that the monitor is set to the correct input source (e.g., HDMI 1).

  • Resolution Blur: Go back to the Display settings and ensure the resolution for the external monitor is set to "(Recommended)".

  • Audio Issues: If audio is playing through the laptop instead of the monitor (or vice-versa), click the speaker icon in your taskbar/shelf to select the desired output device.
